Description

The first time I made this, I asked my family what I could do better next time, and they said: make more! The ingredients are easy to find at the Asian grocery, and it’s easy and fast to make, too.

Ingredients

  • 5 cloves Garlic, Chopped, Divided
  • 4 teaspoons Oil (vegetable Or Olive), Divided
  • 2 teaspoons Fish Sauce, Divided
  • 1 teaspoon Soy Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Oyster Sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Sugar, Divided
  • 1 dash Black Pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon Vinegar (red Wine Or Cider)
  • 1 dash Salt
  • 1 whole Red Onion, Sliced Paper Thin
  • 3 cups Watercress-thick Stems Removed
  • 2 pounds Beef Steak (Filet, Porterhouse, Sirloin, Etc.) Chopped Into 1" Cubes

Preparation

1. Make marinade for beef by combining 4 cloves of chopped garlic, 3 teaspoons oil, 1 teaspoon fish sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, 1 teaspoon sugar, and a dash of pepper. Mix well to dissolve sugar. Add meat, stir to coat, and set aside to marinate for 30 minutes.

2. Make marinade for onions by combining vinegar, remaining 1 teaspoon fish sauce, and remaining 1 teaspoon sugar. Mix well to dissolve sugar. Add paper thin onion slices, stir to coat, and set aside to marinate for 10 minutes.

3. After onions have marinated, add a dash of salt. Mix to coat. Combine watercress with onion mixture. Mound on serving platter. (For individual plating, mound 1/6th of salad on individual plates.)

4. Heat approximately 1 teaspoon oil in a wok or skillet and heat till very hot. Add last clove of chopped garlic and stir. Add beef cubes and fry quickly till seared on the outside, but still a little pink on the inside. Pour over watercress.

5. Enjoy!

I only rated this intermediate because of the ingredients. Sometimes that Asian grocery store can be a bit intimidating and hard to find things in if you’re a newbie, like me!
But other than this, I think this recipe is super easy to make and pretty fool proof.
Hope some of you try it and enjoy it as much as we do!

The onions, THE ONIONS!!! So incredibly delicious. The beef was amazing as well, although I will thinly slice next time.

I made this last night after I found a huge bunch of watercress at my Asian grocery. I added chunks of tomato, but followed the recipe closely. It was wonderful and EASY. Just remember to wash and pick over the watercress before you use it.
