Description

Real comfort food done plain and simple. This usually tough cut of meat will melt in your mouth after slow cooking all day. Serve with mashed potatoes, veggie and rolls.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Cubed Steak (about 4 Pieces)
  • Flour For Breading
  • 3 Tablespoons Oil
  • 1 cup Sliced Mushrooms (optional)
  • 3 cups Water, Divided
  • 3 envelopes Beef Gravy Or Mushroom Gravy, 1 Ounce Packets (beef, Mushroom Beef, Herbed Beef, Mushroom...mix And Match To Your Liking)

Preparation

Roll cubed steak in flour.

Place in hot oil for frying. Brown on both sides (you don’t have to cook it all the way through – just sear it).

Place steak in crock pot along with mushrooms. Cover with two cups of water.

Cook on low for 8 hours.

Half an hour before serving mix the gravy packs with the remaining cup of water.

Pour the gravy mixture over the cubed steak. Let cook for 30 minutes more or until the gravy has thickened.

I first left a review on this 4 years ago and it is STILL my go to recipe any time I find cube steak on sale. It’s just fail proof comfort food and my family loves it. And it literally takes only a few minutes to throw together. Oh and insider trick, one busy day I knew we wouldn’t be home til late and would want to eat right away and not mess with the add the gravy packets and wait 30 minutes so i added everything in the morning and let it all cook all day and while it didn’t get as thick as normally it tasted just as good and still spooned just fine over a nice heap of mashed potatoes.

The meat came out really dry when I made it. I can’t image why as it had plenty of water in it to cook for the 8 hours. What am I doing wrong?

This was absolutely the best cubed steak. Tender!!! it was falling apart and pieces were mixed in with the gravy which was yummy on it’s on. The five kids in my house scarfed it down which says a lot. When you can get kids to eat and not talk you know the food’s good. lol Thank you for sharing this wonderful reciepe

I have been making this for about a year and it’s always good! I don’t add any mushrooms because my kids freak out at the sight and I double the rest of the recipe because everyone can’t get enough of it! I have also thrown in potatoes, onions and carrots kind of like a beef stew and it comes out amazing! I also sprinkle a little flour on the mixture once in the crock pot because we like super thick gravy!! This will be a staple in our home for many years to come especially on cold snowy days days it just warms your soul!!

I won’t be making this again. It was definitely fork-tender, but the taste left a lot to be desired. The smell while it was cooking was not fun either – and this is coming from a mushroom lover. I followed the recipe exactly.

An instant hit for my husband and me! Super delicious and TENDER meat; I love how “melt in your mouth” the meat becomes. Warning: This is NOT for those on a low-sodium diet! ;) But it’s DELICIOUS!
