Description

Your soon to be go-to beans recipe for all of your summer bbqs. As my brother says, “I’ve tried a lot of beans and these are it.” Get out your slow cooker and be prepared to be smitten.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Ground Beef
  • 1 pound Bacon, Cut Into 1-inch Pieces
  • 1 whole Large Onion, Diced
  • 2 cans (15 Oz. Size) Kidney Beans, Light Or Dark, Drained
  • 4 cans (16 Oz. Size) Van DeCamps Pork N Beans, Do Not Drain
  • 2 cans (15 Oz. Size) Lima Beans, Drained
  • 2 cups Ketchup
  • 8 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
  • 4 Tablespoons White Vinegar
  • 3 Tablespoons Liquid Smoke Hickory Flavor
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Black Pepper

Preparation

Brown ground beef in skillet. Drain off fat and put beef in slow cooker. Cut bacon into 1″ pieces and brown in the same skillet. Add to slow cooker. Cook chopped onions in the bacon fat until translucent and soft. Add to slow cooker. Dump the rest of the ingredients into the slow cooker and stir together well. Cover and cook on low 5-6 hours.

Notes:
You’ll need a 6-quart slow cooker for the amounts in this recipe, however you can easily cut everything in half and use a smaller one. I make big batch because the leftovers are fantastic, and guests like to take some home.
You can decrease the fat content by draining the fat off before adding to the slow cooker or you can go all PW and include the bacon grease for added flavor.
Sometimes I throw the onions in with the bacon after it starts to render its fat and cook them together instead of separately. It’s yummy both ways.

My husband’s words when I made this for dinner: “You need to put this on the internet somewhere – people everywhere need to know about this recipe!” Needless to say, it was a hit. I even left out the liquid smoke & it was still great. Leftovers reheat really well too.

This is exactly what I was looking for! I had this at a friends party years back and wanted to make and freeze in individual servings for quick grab and go lunches. I finally found a really good yummy version that isn’t just canned beans, ground beef and bbq sauce! Thanks for posting. As a quick variation- I used canneloni beans in place of kidney beans. just as yummy! So far this holds up to freezing and reheating really really well.
