Description

For those naysayers of beans, just try them once. Great with cornbread.

Ingredients

  • 2 pieces Smoked Ham Shanks (not Ham Hocks) Rinsed. You Can Substitute The Ham For Other Smoked Meats.
  • 1 bag (16 Oz. Bag) Dry Navy Beans (rinsed)
  • 1 teaspoon Salt To Taste

Preparation

Rinse and trim your smoked ham shanks and place them in the bottom of a 6-qt crock pot. Rinse the dry beans and make sure there are no pebbles in them (yes … occasionally you will get “things” like pebbles in your bag of beans). Pour the beans over the ham and fill the crock pot almost to the top with water. Cook on high for approximately 3-4 hours. Salt to taste. Great with cornbread.

I made these beans this weekend. The flavor was excellent, and definitely an easy prep. I subbed bacon for the ham hock, and it gave it the same “meaty” flavor. Next time I would use a bit less water. I would have liked them a bit thicker…
