Description

I think my husband married me because I knew how to make chicken fried steak and pie. This is a birthday dinner staple at our house.

Ingredients

  • FOR THE STEAK:
  • 2 Tablespoons Lemon Pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Onion Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Salt, Or To Taste
  • 2 teaspoons Fresh Ground Black Pepper
  • 2 teaspoons Thyme
  • 2 teaspoons Paprika
  • 1 pound Round Steak, Pounded To Tenderize And Cut Into Serving Size Pieces
  • 1 whole Egg
  • 1 cup Water
  • 2 cups All-purpose Flour
  • Vegetable Oil, For Frying
  • _____
  • FOR THE GRAVY:
  • 3 Tablespoons Seasoned Flour
  • 1-½ cup Milk

Preparation

Combine all seasonings and mix well. I usually make a triple batch and keep in the freezer so I don’t have to mix it together each time.

Beat eggs and water together and set the bowl aside.

Combine 2 Tablespoons of seasoning mix with the flour.

Dip steak portions in flour, then in egg wash and flour again. Let the flour covered steak rest for 5-10 minutes while your vegetable oil heats in your skillet. (Note: reserve the flour mixture for the gravy). Fry flour covered steak in hot oil until brown on all sides.

Cream Gravy:
Drain all but 3 Tablespoons of oil from your fry pan. Stir in 3 Tablespoons of the reserved seasoned flour and let cook over low heat about 5 minutes, don’t brown. Stir in milk and simmer until thickened.

Serve with mashed potatoes and enjoy! (Don’t wear your tight jeans when serving this!)
