Description

A deliciously fun spin on regular Sloppy Joes!

Ingredients

  • ½ whole Large Sweet Onion, Minced Finely
  • Bacon Fat Or Olive Oil, For Sauteeing
  • 1 clove Garlic, Pressed Through A Garlic Press
  • 1 pound Ground Round
  • 1-½ teaspoon Chili Powder (I Like Ancho Chili Powder)
  • 2 teaspoons Yellow Mustard, Or To Taste
  • 1 can (15 Oz. Size) Tomato Sauce
  • ¼ cups Water
  • 1 pinch Sugar
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire Sauce
  • Kosher Salt And Black Pepper To Taste
  • 8 sticks Mozzarella String Cheese, At Room Temperature
  • 8 whole Hot Dog Buns, Toasted
  • Green Onions, For Garnish (optional)

Preparation

Sauté the onions in bacon fat (or olive oil). Once translucent and soft, add the garlic; cook for one minute. Add the ground round and cook thoroughly. Use a potato masher to break up the meat into small pieces.

Add the ancho chili powder, mustard, tomato sauce, water and a pinch of sugar to the meat mixture. Stir, and then add a few drops of Worcestershire sauce to taste. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer over medium heat for 10-15 minutes.

Place the cheese sticks inside the toasted buns and top with the sloppy Joe sauce. Sprinkle with green onions or anything else your heart desires and serve!

The sloppy sauce makes 4 cups so you may have leftovers!

Fantastic! Honestly, the thought of Sloppy Joes isn’t something my husband and I would really entertain. However, I stumbled upon this recipe and thought the kids would enjoy it…needless to say, the whole family loved these and they didn’t last long! (And, like another reviewer, I too loved that this recipe didn’t include ketchup.)

The chili was delish by itself…my cheese sticks were organic and basically stayed hard and were a bit weird, but this was an overall hit at my house!
