Description

Just as fashion trends re-emerge, so it is with recipes. When I was little, my mom would make these loose meat burgers that were popularized on the back of Lipton Onion Soup boxes. Today, I made them for a group of young people who had never had them before. I now feel truly old. So here is my reinvention of the Onion Burger.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Lean Hamburger
  • 1 can (about 10 Oz. Can) Any Good Onion Soup
  • 1 Tablespoon Wondra Flour
  • 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
  • 4 slices American Cheese
  • 4 whole Hamburger Buns

Preparation

Brown hamburger meat by breaking apart with a potato masher. Drain well. Add the Wondra flour and continue to cook for one to two minutes to cook off the flour taste. Add the Worcestershire sauce and the undiluted onion soup. Mix. Season with pepper to taste. Onion soup should be salty enough, but taste and add according to taste.

Simmer on the stovetop till sauce has mostly evaporated and is thick. Spoon onto buns and top with a cheese slice. Place the burgers in a baking dish and bake in a hot oven at 350-400 degrees for approximately 15 minutes or until cheese is melted and the top bun is a little crispy to touch. Sometimes when making these for a crowd, we individually wrap each in foil to facilitate the ease of serving. Everyone grabs one or two and eats them from the foil package.

That sounds yummy and easy! Have you tried freezing the foil wrapped packages and heating later? If it works, it would be a great option for quick meals when we’re dashing out to meetings at night!
