Description

This “comfort” steak dish combines tender beef, sweet pepper and onions in a tangy sauce that melds tomato and Italian seasoning under a cheesy topping. I serve it with loaded mashed potatoes and garlic biscuits.

My guys love it. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • ¼ cups All-purpose Flour
  • 2 pounds Tenderized Beef Round Steak, Cut Into Serving-size Pieces
  • ¼ cups Butter
  • 1 can (14 Oz. Size) Diced Tomatoes, Undrained (Or Tomato Puree Or Sauce)
  • ⅛ teaspoons Salt, Or To Taste
  • 1 Tablespoon Dried Italian Seasoning
  • ⅛ teaspoons Ground Black Pepper
  • ¾ cups Chopped Green Bell Pepper
  • ¾ cups Chopped Onion (I Use Sweet Yellow)
  • 6 ounces, weight Shredded Mozzarella Cheese

Preparation

Place flour in a large, resealable plastic bag. Add beef, a couple of pieces at a time, and shake to coat. Remove meat from the bag , shaking off the excess flour.

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown steak on both sides in butter (don’t skimp here and use margarine – enjoy the real thing and use real butter!). Add the tomatoes, salt, Italian seasoning, and black pepper. Bring to a boil/bubble. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove cover, turn meat, and re-coat the tops of the steak with the surrounding sauce. Add green pepper and onion. Cover and simmer for another 15 minutes or until vegetables and steak are tender. Turn off heat and sprinkle with shredded cheese. Replace the cover for a couple of minutes until the cheese melts. (I sprinkle cheese on each individual steak piece so that when served, each is visible as a serving).

I was thinking of making this over the weekend. Do you think the tomatoes with the Italian spices would work well with this recipe?

After realizing that I rarely cook with beef, I went on a search for some good beef recipes to try. This one was a huge success and I’ve made it multiple times. It is wonderful, so flavorful and tender! This dish now has a permanent place in my menu rotations. Yum!

I want to amend my earlier comment – I have made this several times and we love it every time!
