Another of my grandmother’s recipes that I L-O-V-E! The original version is totally full of fat, but oh-so-good! I have tweaked it to make it gluten free, but you can use flour to thicken if you like. This is also made with ground turkey instead of hamburger meat.
Note: this dish can be made with hamburger. If so, do not use the bouillon. You should have enough fat to make plenty of gravy.
To make “Hamburger” Gravy:
Brown the 85/15 ground turkey (it must be 85/15—do not use extra lean 97/3 or any other ground turkey or you will not have any drippings to make the gravy). Add the onion flakes. Combine and stir. Do NOT drain the meat. Reduce heat to medium.
Dissolve bouillon cubes in about a cup of hot water and add to the pan. Add frozen peas. Let cook for about 2 minutes. Combine cornstarch with a bit of cold water to dissolve and then stir into the pan until gravy thickens.
To make mashed potatoes:
Cut potatoes into small cubes. Put them into a large pot and cover with water. Boil and then cook for about 20 minutes or until soft. Add milk and butter and mash until smooth. Salt and pepper if you’d like.
Serve the Hamburger Gravy on top of mashed potatoes. Delicious! Enjoy!
