Description

An easy, tasty dish that my Grandma learned to make while on the mission field in Guyana, S.A. Contrary to it’s name, there is nothing Chinese about it!

Ingredients

  • 1-½ pound Ground Beef
  • 2 teaspoons Chopped Onion (dehydrated Kind)
  • 4 cups Shredded Cabbage (or Cole Slaw Mix)
  • 2 cups Shredded Celery
  • 1-½ cup Shredded Carrots
  • 1 bag Medium Egg Noodles (8 Oz.) I Use "Inn Maid" Brand

Preparation

In a large skillet, fry ground beef with chopped onions until no longer pink; drain. Add shredded cabbage, shredded celery and shredded carrots to skillet and stir fry on low to medium heat until vegetables are tender.

While ground beef and vegetables are cooking, cook egg noodles in boiling water for approx. 7 minutes or until “al dente.” Drain egg noodles. Add noodles to the ground beef and vegetable mixture. Stir fry another 7-10 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Salt and pepper to taste.

This recipe can be made even easier and faster by buying the Dole brand shredded cabbage (Cole Slaw) and carrots. I have yet to find pre-shredded celery, much to my dismay.

Hi, This sounds like a lovely and tasty pasta dish, but this is not Guyanese chow mein. I was born and bred in Guyana and our chow mein has soy sauce or chinese sauce to flavor the noodles, we also do no use egg noodles but Guyanese style chow mein noodles..we make our own. We usually use local vegetables such as pumpkin and bora (chinese long bean) but will substitute with mixed vegetables. It was also brought to Guyana by Chinese settlers who still reside there.

Guyanese or not, this was delicious! We pulled out the soy sauce, sesame oil, hot chili sauce and sriracha as condiments. I do think it probably would have been a bit plain without the condiments.
