Description

Grown-Up Sloppy Joes, a quick and delicious stick-to-your-sides dinner for a crowd that will bring you back to your childhood.

Ingredients

  • ½ cups Vegetable Oil
  • 5 whole Medium-large Onions, Chopped
  • 5 pounds Ground Beef Or Turkey
  • 1 Tablespoon Garlic Powder
  • 4 cups (1 Quart) Ketchup
  • ⅔ cups Soy Sauce
  • 1-¼ cup Dijon Mustard
  • ⅔ cups Brown Sugar
  • ¼ cups Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon Red Pepper Sauce

Preparation

Heat oil over medium-high heat in a large (2-gallon capacity) roasting pan or disposable roasting pan over 2 burners. Add onions; cook until tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Add ground meat, stirring frequently to break up large clumps; cook until no longer pink and liquid evaporates. Drain fat, if necessary.

Mix remaining ingredients and stir them into the cooked meat. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until mixture is thick, rich, and not runny, 5 to 8 minutes. Serve with warm buns.

Yummy! These got thumbs up from hubby and son and myself! I scaled it to 5 servings and cooked the meat and diced onion together for 25 minutes and omitted the oil to cut down on a little bit of fat/calories but followed directions for the sauce (although I do think it ended up being slightly tweaked due to what I had – I only had about 3-4 TBS worth of Dijon and I ended up adding 2 TBS of Worcerstershire instead of just 1 because I wasn’t reading carefully!) I liked the tang from the dijon, sometimes these recipes are very “barbecuey” and I didn’t think this one was at all – it was just right! Next time I might dice a pepper in there as well for a little extra veg, but the sauce was great! :)
