Description

This makes a rich, dark, sweet sauce full of five spice wonderfullness! Adjust to use your favorite vegetable combination.

Ingredients

  • FOR THE SAUCE:
  • ⅓ cups Orange Juice
  • ¼ cups Soy Sauce
  • 2 cloves Garlic, Minced
  • ¼ teaspoons Red Pepper Flakes
  • 1 teaspoon Grated Ginger
  • 1-½ teaspoon Five Spice Powder
  • 3 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon Toasted Sesame Oil
  • _____
  • FOR ASSEMBLY:
  • 1 pound Ribeye Or Top Sirloin Steak
  • 1 whole Small Red Bell Pepper
  • 1 whole Small Onion
  • ½ pounds Fresh Asparagus
  • 2 Tablespoons Peanut Oil

Preparation

Combine all sauce ingredients in a small bowl and set aside.

Trim steak and cut into ¼ inch strips. Cut red pepper and onion into thin strips, and asparagus into 1 inch pieces.

Heat the peanut oil on medium high heat in a large skillet. Add steak strips a few at a time and brown on each side taking care not to overcrowd the skillet. Remove the browned strips to a plate while you finish cooking the remaining steak.

Add the bell pepper, onion and asparagus to the skillet and stir fry just until onion starts to become tender, about 2-3 minutes.

Return steak to skillet with the veggies and then pour in the sauce. Bring to a boil and cook for 1 minute.

Five Spice powder is a combination of cinnamon, cloves, anise, fennel and szechuan peppercorns. If you want to make your own there are a number of recipes online. I just do the lazy thing and buy it premade.

This is *delicious*. The sauce is very flavorful and the vegetables yummy! I think you could put any meat in there you wanted. We’ll definitely be having this again.
