Description

I love the flavor of this pasta and it only takes one pan! While the pasta bakes, heat some garlic bread and make a salad and you have a great meal.

Ingredients

  • 5 cloves Garlic, Minced
  • ½ cups Chopped Mushrooms
  • 2 whole Mild Italian Sausage Links, Casings Removed
  • ¼ teaspoons Red Pepper Flakes
  • 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
  • 1 can Crushed Tomatoes (28 Ounces)
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • 2 cups Water
  • 8 ounces, weight Penne Pasta
  • ¼ cups Heavy Cream
  • ¼ cups Chopped Fresh Basil
  • ½ cups Grated Parmesan Or Romano Cheese
  • 1 cup Grated Italian Cheese Blend Or Mozzarella Cheese
  • Salt And Pepper, to taste

Preparation

Preaheat oven to 400 degrees.

In a large oven safe skillet, saute garlic, mushrooms, Italian sausage and red pepper flakes in olive oil over medium heat, stirring until sausage is broken up and loses its pink color.

Add the crushed tomatoes and salt and simmer for about 10 minutes.

Add water and pasta. Cover and simmer for about 15 minutes until pasta is al dente, stirring occasionally.

Stir in cream, basil and parmesan cheese. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.

Top with the Italian cheese blend and place the skillet in the oven.

Bake for 10-15 minutes until cheese is melted and starts to turn golden.

Forgot to mention that if you want a more traditional baked pasta you can leave out the mushrooms and sausage and make as directed. They are completely optional!

It looks like we are trading recipes today!
Pasta is one of my all time favorite foods, and it has to have a tomato based sauce to be super great, so I know this will be a keeper! Thanks for the post!

This has become my new favorite pasta dish. We have made it several times already. I also add a little more pasta. You’re missing out if you skip on the sausage…the sausage and red pepper flakes give it such wonderful flavor! Thanks so much for sharing this!

Excellent recipe and SO, SO easy! I used a little more pasta than it called for (I used about 12 oz) as I wanted to stretch it a little further. My whole family liked it (even my 4 yr. old and 2 yr. old). I wouldn’t change/add anything. Thanks for sharing!

I made this tonight and it was a huge hit with the whole family! I used chicken basil sausage and a few different seasonings to meet what I had on hand, but this was a simple, tasty dinner that came together wonderfully. Thanks for the recipe!
