Description

Homemade is best with this flavor-packed version of store-bought extract!

Ingredients

  • 5 whole Madagasgar Vanilla Beans
  • 1 cup Vodka

Preparation

Slit vanilla beans open lengthwise and place in jars. Add in vodka. Let steep for at least 6 weeks, shaking a few times a week. If you do give these out before the extract is fully infused, attach a note explaining when it is best used.

Notes:
1. The ratio for this pungent homemade version of vanilla extract is 5 vanilla beans for 1 cup of vodka.
2. You can use any alcohol—bourbon and rum are also frequently recommended—but inexpensive vodka adds no flavor of its own and allows the vanilla to shine.
3. You can use any kind of vanilla beans, but Madagasgar is considered the most flavorful and baking-friendly.
