Description

There was a cafe in my old neighborhood that used to serve this drink. After it shut down, I searched countless other cafes for a similar drink, but never found anything quite like it. Not wanting to give up, I scoured the internet for a recipe, but ended up adapting/combining two recipes to re-create the magic!

If you like chai tea, pumpkin spiced lattes, or horchata, you will LOVE this drink!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Medium, Coarse Ground Coffee Beans (Medium To Dark Roast)
  • 2 Tablespoons Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cardamom
  • ½ teaspoons Freshly-ground Nutmeg
  • 5 whole Cloves
  • 54 ounces, fluid Water, Preferrably Filtered
  • 1 can (14 Oz. Can) Sweetened Condensed Milk

Preparation

Grind your coffee to a medium/coarse grind. Measure 1 cup of the grounds into a small bowl.

Add your spices to the coffee in the measuring cup. Stir the spice and coffee mixture together.

Pour the filtered water into your French press (I have a 12-cup French press) to just under the top silver line. Pour this water into a pot and boil the water. While the water comes to a boil, fill your French Press with hot water from the tap. This will heat the glass and keep the press from cooling too quickly.

Once the water comes to a boil, dump the water out the the French Press and add the coffee and spice mixture. Then add the boiling water to the press.

Steep for 10 minutes.

Open the sweetened condensed milk and pour it into the bottom of a pitcher.

Plunge the coffee at the end of 10 minutes.

Pour the hot coffee through a sieve (to catch large pieces of coffee and cloves) over the condensed milk in your pitcher and stir with a spoon until well mixed.

Take 8 oz. glasses and fill them with ice. Pour the coffee over the ice in each glass and enjoy!

Makes 6 servings.

It keeps well and it tastes even better the second day, if it lasts that long.

Note: If you don’t have a French Press, you could put the coffee and spices in cheese cloth, put it in your pitcher and then pour the boiling water over the top. After 10 minutes, remove the spices and add your sweetened condensed milk and stir. I have not personally tested this method yet, but I don’t want anyone to miss out on the deliciousness just because they don’t have a French Press. Next time I make this recipe, I will test this and see how it compares!
