Description

The best pie I’ve ever made! Adapted from allrecipes.com Dutch Apple Pie with Oatmeal Streusel.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole 9 Inch Pie Shell
  • 5 whole Peeled And Sliced Apples
  • 2 Tablespoons All-purpose Flour
  • ⅓ cups White Sugar
  • ¼ cups Brown Sugar
  • ½ teaspoons Ground Cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoons Ground Nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoons Ground Allspice
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter (salted)
  • ¾ cups All-purpose Flour
  • ½ teaspoons Ground Cinnamon
  • ½ cups Packed Brown Sugar
  • ¾ cups Rolled Oats
  • 1 teaspoon Lemon Zest
  • ½ cups Butter (salted)

Preparation

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Fit pie crust into pan, set aside.

To make the apple filling: Place apples in a large bowl. In a separate bowl combine 2 tablespoons flour, white sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Mix well, then add to apples. Toss until apples are evenly coated.

Place apple filling in crust, dot with two tablespoons of butter, bake in oven for 10 minuets, and lick hands.

While pie is baking, make streusel topping: In a medium bowl combine 3/4 cup flour, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, brown sugar, oats, and lemon peel. Mix thoroughly, then cut in 1/2 cup butter or margarine until mixture is crumbly. Remove pie from oven when the cook time is up and sprinkle streusel on top. Lick hands and bowl.

Reduce heat to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Add streusel to the top of the pie. Bake an additional 30 to 35 minutes, until streusel is browned and apples are tender.

Store in fridge. It tastes marvellous cold and hot!

Enjoy!

In the interest of full disclosure, I have never made this pie exactly as the recipe states. However, this is definitely the best streusel topping I have ever had. It’s fantastic on a dutch apple pie and equally tasty on top of a tart cherry pie. It’s my go-to pie topping when I only want to use one crust. That lemon zest adds just the right touch.
