This was the first time that I’ve tried making banana pudding from scratch and it definitely won’t be my last. Especially after following this recipe! It turned out perfectly. The custard is super easy to make and very tasty. The ratio of ingredients was spot on. Dishing it up was picture perfect as well. Thanks for sharing a fantastic recipe!

OMG, OMG, OMG!!! This is the bomb banana pudding. I made extra pudding and added a little banana extract/ My family and friends devoured this on Thanksgiving Day. Thanks for the bestest pudding ever.

This is not Southern banana pudding. Southern pudding is served warm and has meringue on top.

Hmmm… looks like meringue on top to me. Anyway, regardless of who is going to use the review section to quibble over whether or not something is authentic, I think this is awesome. I’m from the north and have never heard of this before. It sounds positively yummy, and I’m going to make it next weekend. Thanks for posting!!!

I was raised in Mississippi and Georgia. I have only had cold banana pudding and this one sounds perfect and super easy. Thank you for the post.

Southern Banana Pudding has meringue on top. This recipe has whipped cream. It still sounds delicious. I will substitute meringue on mine, though.

This sounds wonderful! I’m from Charleston, South Carolina a Southern city and I’m sure there are no rules on what makes banana pudding Southern. Thanks for the post and I know I’ll enjoy your Southern version!

I always thought banana pudding was just mashed up bananas. This sounds so much better, and I can’t wait to try it

I was born and raised in Louisiana, and I say that banana pudding is “southern” whether it is served warm with meringue on top (the way my grammaw made it) or chilled with whipped cream on top. I remember the chilled version more from funerals and church suppers, probably because that was an easier version to transport and leave out for buffet-style eating. I always preferred the chilled version for two reasons: it was more refreshing in the heat, and I’ve never been a big meringue fan. So I will definitely be trying this version.

I live south of Atlanta, and I’ve had authentic banana pudding out of a lifelong southerner’s fridge. AND I’ve had it served warm/room temp elsewhere. This recipe looks great. Simple and delicious. Is anyone aware of a wheat/gluten free option in place of Nilla wafers?

LOL…I am so entertained by the banter about authentic or not… you doubters are ridiculous. If you don’t like it don’t make it. If it sounds delicious, why do you care why the name of it is??

To those who say this is not Southern because there is not a meringue on top … my grandmother and my mother used whipped cream on their banana pudding. They are both from Texas and that is how they taught me … I do as I’m told!
I have seen some with meringue and that is also traditional. Thanks for all the great banter! I love it!
