Description

This is a quick, easy, perfect dessert recipe. Make it for gatherings and always get invited back. Or make it for your family to brighten up any day.

Ingredients

  • 6 whole Medium Apples, Peeled, Sliced And Cored (Macoun Are The Best, But Macintosh Work Well Too)
  • 2 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
  • 2 Tablespoons Water
  • ¾ cups Firmly Packed Dark Brown Sugar
  • ½ cups All-purpose Flour
  • ½ cups Rolled Oats
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • ½ cups Salted Butter

Preparation

Heat oven to 375 degrees.

Combine water and lemon juice in a small cup.

To make the topping: combine the brown sugar, flour, rolled oats, cinnamon and butter in a medium bowl. Using two knives, cut together the ingredients until crumbly.

Place half of the apples in an 8 or 9-inch square pan. Sprinkle half of the lemon juice and water mixture over the tops of the apples. Sprinkle 1/3 of the topping over the apple layer.

Place the remaining apples on top of the apple and topping layers. Sprinkle the remaining lemon juice and water mixture over apples. Sprinkle the remaining topping over the apples. Make sure to cover the whole pan evenly; this is going to turn into the top crust.

Bake at 375 degrees for 40-45 minutes.

Hey MW, I actually have 2 tips for you. First, the dark brown sugar is really important, it keeps everything sticking together better. Second, if you let the butter heat up just a little (I put it on the oven while it preheats) it’s easier to cut in to crumbles. If you start to use your hands to make “crumbles” everything breaks apart. But, when it’s taking forever to cut with two knives, using your hands is really tempting. I’ve definitely make that mistake before!

I made this for a friend of ours. I’m not sure what happened, but the “crisp” was not crispy. Even before I baked it, the topping was not “crumbly,” but kind of runny. I realized after I made it that I had used light brown sugar instead of dark brown sugar–not sure if that made a difference. But it sure did smell good when it was baking in the oven and it looked very tasty. I plan on trying this recipe again with the dark brown sugar; hopefully I will have better luck the 2nd time around!

This is so good my kids raved for days. I’ve made it two times this week (doubling the recipe the second time.) It’s in the oven now — we’re having it for dinner (not dessert, dinner!)

Secret weapon for sure! I made this a few weeks ago when we had friends over. Big hit!

My modification: gluten free oats and Pamela’s Baking & Pancake mix for the flour.

Love this recipe! This was the first apple crisp I’ve made in about 7 years. It was so easy to make and my husband just about died on the first bite!!
