I really worried about my ability (as a relative novice in the baking department) at pulling this cake together and making it look good, but I was amazed at how easy it really was. As Manda2177 says, it’s all about patience. Even for someone as new to cooking as I am, it turned out beautifully!
With that being said, my experience is that most pretty things don’t taste as good as they look… this is NOT the case with this cake! My entire family said it was one of the best cakes they’d ever tasted. I opted for French Vanillia cake mix to go with the cream cheese frosting recipe listed here, and I just couldn’t get over how moist it turned out. The frosting wasn’t overpoweringly sweet like a buttercream and didn’t take anything away from the cake.
Seriously- don’t be intimidated by what looks like a complex process. It’s easy, beautiful, AND tasty! And my daughter was in heaven for her 4th birthday.
Thanks for sharing this great cake!

Wonderful birthday cake and surprise for everyone when you make that first cut! It takes time to make, but very doable, even my daughters (6 & 8) helped with it

I am giving this a 5 rating because it really was a huge hit and my guess is anything that wasn’t perfect with my cake was due to the fact that I am NOT a baker by any stretch of the imagination. I made this for my twins’ 4th birthday party and they begged me to make it again last year (but I didn’t…cuz I’m a chicken). Anyway, the cake is HUGE and beautiful! Now, the flavor? Again, this is certainly my fault, but I have decided that food coloring has a flavor…if you use enough of it. I wanted the purple more purple-y, ok? Don’t judge. =) And I think I did something wrong with the frosting….but it could have just been the flavor of the purple layer…. at any rate, the kids scarfed it down, so that’s a hit in my book! And I took lots of pictures so I could get oohs and aaahs for years to come. Thanks so much for posting!

Made this for my four-year-old daughter’s birthday…it was a big hit! The flavor was much better than I expected too.

Thank you very much for such detailed instructions. I made this for my daughter’s 3rd birthday. Not hard to do, but takes some time. It was a hit…yummy and great looking.

We make the this cake, too. It is the official birthday cake on my mom’s side! We’ve put a new spin on it. Instead of making individual layers, make it in a bundt pan and just layer the different colors. People just love it when you slice into it and see the rainbow!

If anyone wants to email me with pictures or feedback or questions or improvements to the recipe… please do so!!
Sounds like those of you who have made it have some great memories…and those of you who will make it are going to create some!!
Please share!! I might even be posting them on my blog (with your permission) if enough people send pics.
Good luck and have fun eating!

we’ve done this with cupcakes, both kids and adults gasp and want to know how it’s done -always a huge hit! Not to mention, there is never a crumb left.
