Description

This pie has been a family favorite as long as I can remember. My husband’s family has a similar one. Family get-togethers would not be complete without at least one. I did update the recipe by using REAL chocolate rather than cocoa as the original recipe required.

Ingredients

  • 1-½ cup Sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons Flour
  • 1-½ cup Milk
  • 1 ounce, weight Semi-sweet Chocolate
  • 3 whole Eggs, Separated
  • ¼ cups Butter
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 whole Baked Pie Crust

Preparation

In a heavy saucepan, combine sugar and flour, mixing well. Stir in milk a little at at time until flour and sugar are dissolved.

Chop chocolate into small pieces and add to the milk mixture. Cook until hot. Beat egg yolks and mix a little of hot mixture into them. Pour into pan with milk mixture. Add butter and cook until very thick. Add vanilla and pour into cooked pastry.

Use egg whites to make meringue to top pie. Brown meringue in oven. Chill before serving. Keep leftovers refrigerated if there are any.

I just baked this a minute ago. It is delicious but I wondered if you really meant 1 ounce of chocolate? I put one oz. & the milk mixture was barely discolored. I ended up putting about 4 ounces. It is very, rich and wonderful and just what the doctor ordered!! Thanks for the recipe, I’ll be making lots of chocolate pies in the future!
