Description

Traditional Greek Cookies, crumbly and delicious, dripping in honey and rolled in nuts. These are easy to make and a special treat!

Ingredients

  • ½ pounds Butter
  • 1 whole Egg Yolk
  • ½ cups Milk
  • 3 cups Flour
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • FOR THE FILLING:
  • 1 cup Chopped Walnuts
  • 2 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Cinnamon
  • FOR THE SYRUP:
  • 1-½ cup Water
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • ⅔ cups Honey
  • ⅓ cups Lemon Juice
  • FOR ROLLING THE COOKIES:
  • 1-½ cup Chopped Walnuts

Preparation

Melt butter. Add egg yolk and milk. Stir. Sift flour with baking powder and add a little at a time to the milk mixture. Knead into a firm ball.

Prepare the filling. Mix chopped nuts, sugar and cinnamon. Take a small amount of dough, about a 1-inch ball, and flatten to a 2 to 2 1/2 inch round. Place 1 teaspoon of the nut filling in the center. Fold over and seal well.

Bake at 350ºF for 30 minutes.

While the cookies are baking, prepare the syrup. Combine water, sugar, honey and lemon juice together in a medium-sized saucepan. Whisk together and let boil over medium high heat for about 10–15 minutes, stirring frequently.

Dip the baked finikia into the hot syrup and then roll in the remaining nuts.

Makes 36 cookies.
