Description

This is a wonderful twist on the traditional banana pudding. If you like banana pudding, you are going to love this.

Ingredients

  • 2 boxes Instant Banana Pudding (3.4 Ounce Boxes)
  • 3 cups Milk
  • 1 bar Cream Cheese (8 Ounce Bar, Room Temperature)
  • 1 can Sweetened, Condensed Milk - 14-ounce Can
  • 1 tub Frozen Whipped Topping (8 Ounce Tub, Cool Whip, Thawed)
  • 1 box Nilla Wafer Cookies (12 Ounce Box)
  • 3 whole Bananas

Preparation

Mix together the pudding mix and milk with a mixer until it begins to thicken, about 3 minutes. Add cream cheese and condensed milk, beat until blended. Fold in the Cool Whip.

Prepare a serving dish with a layer of Nilla Wafers and then a layer of banana slices. Add 1/2 of the pudding mixture; repeat layers of cookies, then bananas, then pudding one more time. To garnish, place a few banana slices on top of the pudding, and sprinkle with Nilla Wafer crumbs. Chill for atleast 1 hour.

This is very similar to Paula Deen’s “Not Yo Mama’s Banana Pudding” except she uses Pepperidge Farm Chessman Cookies. I love that recipe…

My guests really enjoyed this rich version of southern-style banana pudding. I was worried that the sweetened condensed milk would be overkill and the dessert would be too sweet, but the cream cheese seemed to cut the sweetness nicely. Next time I make it, though, I will whip the softened cream cheese first and “temper” it with a little of the pudding mixture before adding the entire amount. Even though it was completely softened before I started mixing I still ended up with bits of cream cheese scattered throughout the pudding. It didn’t affect the taste but I found the texture a little off-putting. The flavor was a huge hit and we will be making this dessert often.
