Description

Spice Cake with hot water (Pain d’epices a l’eau chaude), this is a cake my mom and I would make when I was a kid. It is delicious warm or cold and full of delicious spices. Also a great gift to bring to a down and out friend!

Ingredients

  • 1-⅔ cup Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Ginger
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cloves
  • ⅔ cups Hot Water
  • ⅔ cups Molasses
  • ⅓ cups Butter, At Room Temperature
  • ⅓ cups Sugar
  • 1 whole Egg, At Room Temperature

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350F.

Mix together: flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon and cloves, set aside.

Mix your hot water with your molasses, set aside.

Cream your butter with your mixer until soft, add your sugar, mix well. Next add your egg. Gradually and alternating, add half of your dry ingredients and half of your water/molasses combo. Then add the last half of dry ingredients then the rest of your liquids. DO NOT over mix.

Pour your batter into a buttered 8×8 square dish.

Bake for 35-40 minutes.

Fair warning: at about 10 minutes into the cooking the smell of pure heaven and spice will fill your home! You have been warned!
