Description

An old family recipe: vanilla cake with a maple sauce. Simple and delicious!

Ingredients

  • FOR THE CAKE:
  • 1 cup Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • ⅛ teaspoons Salt
  • 3 Tablespoons Butter, Softened
  • ½ cups Sugar
  • 1 whole Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • ½ cups Milk
  • _____
  • FOR THE SAUCE:
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter
  • 2 Tablespoons Flour
  • 1 cup Cold Water
  • ½ cups Brown Sugar
  • ½ teaspoons Maple Flavoring (or Vanilla)

Preparation

For the cake:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease a 9×9 inch pan.

In a small bowl combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

In a large bowl or mixer, cream butter and sugar together. Add egg and vanilla and beat until smooth. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk to the creamed mixture and beat until smooth.

Pour into prepared pan and bake for 25 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean, or with moist crumbs.

For the sauce:

Melt together the butter and flour in a small sauce pan on medium heat. Add water and whisk out any lumps that may have formed. Add brown sugar. Continue cooking on medium-high, stirring constantly until it boils and thickens, about 5 minutes. Mix in flavoring.

Serve slices of cake with the maple sauce, warm or at room temperature.
