Description

Soft, sink-your-teeth-into ‘em cookies that are quick to mix, roll, cut and bake. Decorate for any holiday or just cut them into circles and eat unfrosted. They’re that good.

Ingredients

  • FOR THE COOKIES:
  • ½ cups Butter, Softened
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 whole Egg, Beaten
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 3-¼ cups All-purpose Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • ½ cups Buttermilk
  • _____
  • FOR THE ICING:
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons Milk
  • 4 drops Food Coloring

Preparation

Cream the butter with the sugar. Add the egg and mix thoroughly, then stir in vanilla. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt in a separate bowl. With the mixer running, gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut with hearts or other shapes. Place on ungreased baking sheets and bake for 8-10 minutes for small cookies or 10-12 minutes for large cookies, or until light brown around edges. Cool on wire racks.

Mix together powdered sugar and milk for a simple icing or use store bought frosting to decorate as desired. Tint with about 4 drops of food coloring, or more if you want darker colors, and add tinted sugars, sprinkles or other decorations.

I tried this recipe yesterday (I wanted to make cut-out cookies and had lots of buttermilk to use up!) and they turned out GREAT! Thanks for the wonderful recipe!
