This recipe was given to me from my cake decorating class by my teacher who is a professional cake decorator. This what she uses on her cakes. I slightly modified this. This icing will crust, but not dry hard. One recipe is enough to fill and frost 8″ or 9″ double layer cake but you will need to double the recipe for decorating the cake. It is very easy and tastes exactly from stores/bakeries!
Cream Crisco and margarine till fluffy. Add powdered sugar gradually at a time, scraping down the icing as you add the sugar and adding the vanilla and almond in between.
Add milk, a tablespoon at a time. When all ingredients are fully incorporated, place mixer on high, whipping icing for 15 minutes to make it fluffy.
Store unused portions in the refrigerator.

Actually, there’s something better than Splenda when it comes to powdered sugar for frosting. Splenda and other substitutes will not work this recipe nor any buttercream in fact. But there is one!! Ideal Confectionery is a low-calorie, sugar substitute that actually is in powdered sugar form. It feels like it, tastes like it and oh soo-omg! Are they for real! YUP! I found them at my local grocery store but stopped carry them even though I bought a butt load of their products because it was cheap, better than any sub-I love their brown sugar brand-no sugar in it actually and it tastes just like it!! And what’s even better about the product that makes you feel good-99% is natural sweetner!! HEAVEN!! Now, I sparingly use my products but you can get their line off of Amazon or visit idealsweet.com!! I have made buttercream frosting with this and truly awesome! Its a dream come true for any diabetic and anyone who is watching their weight! HTH!

do you think Splenda could be subtituted for the powdered sugar? The texture is more fine like the powdered sugar — looking for icing to use for a diabetic.
