Description

Big Red soda was created in Waco, TX in 1937. My family has been making strawberry ice cream with it for as long as I’ve been on this earth. Enjoy the unique strawberry taste and welcome in the summer.

Ingredients

  • 1 can Sweetened, Condensed Milk - 14-ounce Can
  • 1 cup Heavy Cream
  • 1 cup Crushed Strawberries In Heavy Syrup
  • 16 ounces, fluid Big Red Soda

Preparation

In a large bowl, combine sweetened condensed milk and cream. Stir until it is an even consistency. Stir in strawberries. Add Big Red soda right before you are ready to freeze the mix.

I use a 1.5 quart Cuisinart ice cream maker. Turn the maker on, and pour the mix in. Let it run for 20 – 30 minutes until frozen.

Note: I used fresh strawberries. Clean and hull about 2 cups of fresh strawberries. Place in a small sauce pan with 1/2 cup water and 1/4 cup sugar. Cook over medium heat. When soft, mash with a potato masher. Cool in the refrigerator. OR you can buy the can of frozen crushed strawberries and use 1 cup of them.

My family has been making this ice cream for as long as I can remember! We also do a variations with Orange soda and drained canned pineapple for a refreshing tropical flavor! Probably my favorite summer comfort food!

This is one of my favorite ice creams. I have a friend who uses Strawberry Crush because she can’t find Big Red. You may be able to order it online from Big Red but I haven’t checked into it. I’ve used Orange Crush or Shasta to make an orange sherbet type dessert. It tastes like the orange push ups we ate as kids. My sister uses Sprite to make lime sherbet.

Highly recommend this. Tastes just like you’d want strawberry ice cream to taste. Very rich and creamy.

I made a second batch for my husband’s fellow shift workers. I also made strawberry white-chocolate chip cookies to go with it. I held back a few, and my son and I made ice cream sandwiches with them. Talk about good!

missinthekitchen, if you can’t get any Big Red, let me know. I can send you some!

Howdy, Tina. When I was growing up, if you wanted to do ANYTHING other than go to DQ or the Dollar store, you had to go to Waco. LOL

I love Big Red! I have a hard time finding it in Wyoming. What a great recipe. I want to give it a try!
