Place the butter in a stand mixer. Beat on medium speed until fluffy. Slowly add the powdered sugar, a cup at a time until all is incorporated. Turn off the mixer and scrape the bottom of the bowl very well. Add the vanilla and mix again.
Slowly add half of the heavy cream while the mixer is on, and beat for one minute.
Add more cream as needed to achieve a frosting consistency that is very light and spreadable.
Makes enough to easily frost an 8- or 9-inch two layer cake with some left over for decorating.
