Description

Fried dough and apples. Yum! A great accompaniment to tea/coffee, for Sunday brunch or anytime because it’s fast, easy and tastes amazing!

Ingredients

  • FOR THE FRITTERS:
  • 1-¾ cup All-purpose Flour
  • ⅓ cups Cornmeal
  • 2 Tablespoons Vanilla Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • ⅛ teaspoons Salt
  • 2 whole Egg Whites
  • 2 whole Tart Apples Cubed, Or Less If Preferred
  • 1 cup 1% Milk
  • Oil, For Frying
  • _____
  • FOR THE SUGAR COATING:
  • ⅓ cups Vanilla Sugar
  • ½ teaspoons Ground Nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoons Cinnamon

Preparation

Note: You may want to only use 1 1/2 apples depending on your love for chunks.

In a bowl, stir together the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder and salt. In a medium-sized bowl, combine egg whites, apples, and milk. Add to the flour mixture all at once and stir just until combined.

In a large pot (safety first!), heat about an inch of oil over moderately high heat to 375ºF. Drop batter by heaping tablespoonfuls, about 4–5 per batch, into the hot oil. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until golden, turning only once.

Use a slotted spoon to remove and place on paper towels to absorb some of the excess oil. In a Ziploc, combine the sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon for the coating. Add the hot fritters, several at a time, and shake to coat. Serve immediately!
