Description

This is an easy recipe for your own homemade yogurt. It’s easier than you think…. You’ll be shocked at just how easy. Thanks Ginger M. for sharing!

Ingredients

  • ½ gallons Organic Milk
  • ½ cups Live Yogurt
  • ¾ cups Nonfat Dry Milk Powder(optional)
  • ½ cups Sugar Or Honey
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

Preparation

You start by putting the 1/2 gallon of milk in a 2 – 3 quart crock pot. Put lid on and cook on low for 2 1/2 hours. Turn off and let sit (with lid on) for 3 hours.

After 3 hours add the live yogurt. This can be from a previous batch or bought at the store (on the label of the container it will say “live cultures”). Mix it well, until completely incorporated. If you like your yogurt thicker, at this point you can add the dry milk powder. Just make sure you incorporate it well.

This is also the point where you add the sugar or honey and the vanilla extract. If you don’t want to do flavored or sweetened yogurt, just leave it out.

This is THE most important part of making homemade yogurt. Wrap the crock pot (I use a bath towel and clothes pins to cover it completely — if you have a thermal travel bag, that would work too) and let it sit overnight, at least 8 hours. In the morning you will have your very own homemade organic yogurt. Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and stored in the fridge.

Also, if you want to add fruits or granola, stir it in just before serving — NOT when you add the sweetener and vanilla extract.

I recently started making my own yogurt and to make it thick like Greek yogurt, I drained it in cheesecloth after it cultured. If you add the dry milk powder does it make it that thick?

I also hung mine in cheesecloth rather than adding the powdered milk and it is amazing! I couldn’t believe how easy it was too!

The result of this perfect, fool-proof method is an absolutely delcious, creamy yogurt. I made it plain with the addition of the dry milk powder for a thicker product. I also went a step further and drained it overnight in cheesecloth to produce the most heavenly, creamy, thick Greek-style yogurt. Drizzled with honey, it has no equal!
