I’ve been eating steel cut oats for several years now, because they are better for you than more processed varieties. I just found this recipe and have made it several times. There’s so much to love about it! It’s versatile – in individual dishes, I customize it for each person. It’s good as it is, but I’ve tried adding (at various times) walnuts, dried cherries, vanilla…to name a few. I’ve never added the sugar because it’s sweet enough for my taste. My husband adds a little maple syrup to his after baking. The only downside is cleaning the dishes – take a little scrubbing – but it’s worth it to have a recipe that uses steel cut oats. Also, I’ve lightly buttered the dishes I use in the hopes that cleanup will be easier. Haven’t made it without this step, so I don’t know how it compares.

I don’t make steel cut oats as often as I’d like simply because I don’t have time to stand by the stove to cook them – problem solved.
I added the cinnamon and half the sugar to the dish before baking and really liked how the flavours melded together. Mine baked for closer to 40 minutes and needed an extra touch of milk but I think it’s just personal preference as to how well-done one likes their oats. Sprinkled the rest of the sugar on after the dish was out of the oven and added vanilla yogurt as a topping – delicious!
Based on the previous review, I used a light coating of canola oil in my dish and am happy to report that clean-up was painless.
Thanks for the recipe!

Yum, yum, yum! So delicious and so easy. I had never made steel cut oats before, but now I will be making them instead of regular oatmeal.

I too am a lover of steel cut oats but never have the time before work or the foresight on the weekends to make it for myself. This recipe is such a wonderful answer! I love the original recipe (with a little less sugar) – it’s very flavorful and filling. This morning, instead of baked apples and peanut butter, I added fresh nectarines and pecans after cooking – yum! I have found with certain brands I need to add a little more cooking time, 35-40 minutes, for my taste. If I let the dish soak for 1-2 hours I haven’t had any problem with cleaning my bowels afterwards despite the fact that I always “meant” to use cooking spray. Thanks so much for this recipe!

This was definitely a husband-pleaser! I am glad that it tastes like a treat, but has some solid nutrition.

I had steel cut oats for the first time with this recipe! Very good! My 3 year old asked for seconds which is incredible since he’s pretty picky. Just a question…are steel cut oats supposed to be somewhat firm & chewy? I just wasn’t sure if I needed to cook them a few minutes longer…still good though.

delicious! and felt so healthy! although i flung a piece of apple out of the dish and burned my foot this morning!! :/ lol!
it was a little crunchier than regularly prepared steel cut oats, but i loved it the same!! will definitely make it again! try my crockpot steel cut oats!

this is definitely going to become our go-to breakfast! I’ve made steel cut oats on the stove top, but this oven version is so much better!

This was wonderful – I doubled it for the two of us and it was more than enough. I also added about a teaspoon and a half of vanilla extract to the milk before adding to the apple/oats mixture – very good! Thanks for sharing!

This is really good. I recently changed it around by substituting coconut flakes for the apples and dark chocolate peanut butter for the regular kind. Great recipe! Also easy to throw it in the rice cooker before a shower.

This was a great recipe! I changed it just a bit by sprinkling a little brown sugar on the apples prior to cooking, but then again I have a bit of a sweet tooth.
