Description

A great bread to just eat with butter or a little Italian sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 package Rapid-rise Yeast
  • 3 cups Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • ¼ cups Shortening
  • 1-¼ cup Water, Divided

Preparation

Mix 1 cup of warm water with yeast (I use a stand mixer). Mix the rest of the dry ingredients together.

Put dry ingredients in mixing bowl and add the water with the yeast. Mix on low to incorporate. Add the remaining 1/4 cup of water. Mix on level/setting 2 for 15 minutes.

Take out of mixer and knead a little bit more with your hands. Roll into a ball and let rest with plastic wrap over it for 1 hour or until double in size.

Flatten with hands and cut into 4 strips. Braid and lay in a floured cookie sheet and cover with plastic wrap (flour the top of the dough so the plastic wrap won’t stick). Let rise for 45 minutes or until double in size.

Brush with egg wash (1 egg and 3 tablespoons of olive oil, whipped). Bake on 400 degree oven for 15 minutes.

This is an Amazingly easy recipe and it’s delicious! I use wheat flour and it turns out wonderful!

LOVED this recipe!! I used EVOO instead of shorntening, too, and about half way thru baking, I added thinly sliced garlic and butter to the top…YUM!!

This is probably one of the best things I have ever made. No kidding. And it wasn’t as hard as I anticipated. I did find that it was easier to braid when I cut it into four balls, lightly dusted each with flour, stretched them into strips, and then braided. The soft white bread fans in my family (ie, my husband and me) loved it!

This is a good bread — very soft. I used 2 T. olive oil instead of shortening, and I added some dried herbs to the flour. Worked great.
