Description

French bread and butter. That’s it. But it’s the baking technique that sets it apart.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French Bread, Split Lengthwise
  • 2 sticks Regular (salted) Butter, Softened

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Spread one stick of softened butter on each half of the loaf.

Place on a cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes, or until butter is melted and starting to soak into the bread.

Crank on broiler and broil bread for 3 to 5 minutes, watching the whole time. Remove when butter has started to brown and blacken. Don’t under-broil it! The flavor really kicks in when the butter’s color changes.

Slice into strips and serve immediately.

This needs nothing but the butter. I’ve always used galic and topped with parm or mozz cheese but the (grown) kids said they liked this better! And I have to agree! Thanks for another great recipe Ree! I’d give this 5 mitts!

Made this last night. Let’s just say my husband asked me tonight if I was making “that bread” again. Said it was the best stuff he’d ever eaten. I admit I cringed a little bit only making 1/4 loaf with 1/2 stick of butter…But I felt it was my duty to strictly follow the orders of our fearless leader! :) I see now why she calls it THE bread – it melts in your mouth! I will be making it forever more. Make it at your first opportunity. Thanks Ree!

That sounds so simple and yummy! My dad makes bread like this but also smears some roasted garlic on top.

Yum, thank you for the easy one’s Ree. The bread is possibly life changing but I can tell you, you are for sure!

Pretty good! I have to say, though, they asked me what I was “burning”. I used pillsbury’s french bread in the can (so I would have the french bread on hand when Igot ready to use it, but wouldn’t have to worry about it spoiling quickly). I might should have baked the bread the day before, with it being still pretty warm when I spread the butter some of it slipped off.

I’ve made this 3 times and each time folks rave and are surprised that it’s only bread and butter! It’s a staple in the house now…

Not life-changing, but flavorful and so easy!
