Description

A perfect, flaky and easy basic buttermilk scone recipe that can be customized with your favorite fruit and flavors.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose Flour
  • ¼ cups Sugar
  • 2-½ teaspoons Baking Powder
  • ½ teaspoons Baking Soda
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 stick Unsalted Butter, Chilled And Cut Into 1" Pieces
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • FOR THE TOPPING:
  • 2 Tablespoons Melted Unsalted Butter
  • 2 Tablespoons Sugar

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 400ºF.

In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and butter. Using a fork or pastry cutter, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Add in the buttermilk and stir until a dough ball forms.

Turn the dough out onto a well floured surface and roll out to 1/2″ thickness. You can make the scones round, square or triangular; I used a 3″ round cutter. Place the scones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with the melted butter and sprinkle on the sugar.

Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the tops are a very light golden brown.

Makes 8 scones that are best served fresh with a bit of your favorite preserves.
