Description

Mom’s homemade Orange Rolls… Soft, butter and sugary – i.e. heaven! I can eat way, way too many of them!

Ingredients

  • FOR THE ROLLS:
  • 1 cup Milk
  • ½ cups Butter
  • ½ cups Sugar
  • ¾ teaspoons Salt
  • 1 Tablespoon Yeast
  • 1 Tablespoon Sugar
  • ¼ cups Warm Water
  • 2 whole Eggs, Beaten
  • 4 cups All-purpose Flour
  • _____
  • FOR THE FILLING:
  • ½ cups Sugar
  • ½ cups Butter, Softened
  • 2 whole Small Orange Rinds, Zested

Preparation

In a medium saucepan on medium heat, mix the milk, half cup butter, half cup sugar and salt. Cook until butter melts. Remove from heat and let stand until lukewarm.

In a large bowl mix the yeast, 1 tablespoon sugar and warm water. Let stand 10 minutes or until foamy. Mix in the lukewarm milk/butter mixture. Stir in eggs and then slowly add in the 4 cups of flour until dough forms.

Cover and let dough rise to double in size. Once dough has risen mix together all of your ‘filling’ ingredients (butter, sugar and orange rinds). Set aside.

Punch down dough and divide in half. On a floured surface roll out first half of dough into a large square. Spread square with half of ‘filling’ mixture. Roll up lengthwise (like you would cinnamon rolls). Cut the roll into 12 slices and place slices into greased muffin tins. Repeat with other half of dough. Cover tins with kitchen towels and let rolls rise until doubled. (About 1 1/2 – 2 hours).

Bake in a 375 degree (F) oven for 15 minutes.

Hello Holly, Those rolls are just what the doctor ordered. What a great recipe. Amazing flavor that orange peel/zest is. Over the holidays I used a grate of orange zest in things like eggnog, over topping of desserts. I also use it in a scones recipe instead of lemon zest. Lightens up the dish!!

Keep on cooking!!

Delicious! I made some changes. We used finely ground whole white wheat, buttermilk, and added 1/2 Tbsp orange extract to the dough. We did the second rising in the fridge, and baked it in a glass 9×13 pan. We also used a glaze from another recipe: 3oz cream cheese, 1/4c butter, a 1 1/2 c powdered sugar, 1/2 tsp almond extract, dash salt, juice from half an orange. I’m convinced these would have been great without the glaze. We enjoyed every bite!
