1. Preheat oven to 350F.
2. Grease a large cookie sheet.
3. Mix the first 5 ingredients in a large bowl (flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt).
4. Add butter and rub with fingertips until mixture resembles fine meal.
5. Add the apricots and/or raisins and walnuts to the flour mixture.
6. Whisk buttermilk, eggs and vanilla in a medium bowl to blend.
7. Gradually add egg mixture to the flour and stir until moist clumps form.
8. Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface.
9. Knead 4 times to blend.
10. Transfer dough to prepared cookie sheet.
11. Press dough into an 8″ round.
12. Using a small sharp knife, score dough into 8 wedges.
13. Bake until golden brown and a tester inserted into the center comes out clean, about 25 minutes.
