Description

I started using this basic scone recipe years ago after finding it on the inside of some organic butter. I haven’t used another recipe since, and the recipe is so basic, I just “add-in” to my heart’s delight!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Flour
  • 2 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • ¾ teaspoons Salt
  • ½ cups Butter, (one Stick) Slightly Softened
  • 1 whole Large Egg
  • ⅔ cups Milk

Preparation

Preheat oven to 400°F. In a large bowl, use a fork to mix the dry ingredients. Cut the butter into the mixture until it forms coarse crumbles (do not stir). (If using add-ins, mix with the coarse flour crumbles now.)

In a cup, mix egg and milk. Stir milk mixture into the flour mixture, just until blended. Drop batter by 1/4 cup, about 1 inch apart onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until scones are golden brown. Serve them warm or wrap in foil to reheat later.

Serves: 12
Calories per serving: 150 (basic scone)

Adjustments and add-in ideas:

•for sweeter scones, add 1/8 cup sugar
•add grated orange peel and dried cranberries
•add grated lemon zest and blueberries
•cinnamon
•chocolate chips
•dehydrated fruit bits
•topper: use egg wash, sprinkle with turbinado sugar before baking
•even savory add-ins are good: diced ham, shredded cheese, bacon bits …

Experiment! Create! Have fun! And most importantly, enjoy!

This is a great recipe! I didn’t add anything to it other than a bit of vanilla extract because I wanted these for lemon curd and didn’t want anything to over power it. This recipe has been added to my recipe box as a favorite! Thank you!

I’ve been meaning to write a review of this for some time and am only now getting around to it, as I get out the ingredients to make these again. This is my “go to” recipe for scones. They mix up beautifully and are quick to put together for last minute company. I’ve made them plain many, many times to use as a shortcake base with fresh or sugared fruit topping or to serve with butter and our homemade peach or pear jam. I’ve also made them with chocolate chips. But our favorite is with lemon zest, lemon juice, and fresh blueberries. My only changes to this recipe are that I press out the dough and cut the scones into triangles and I add an egg wash and course sugar on top. Thank you so much for posting this recipe!

Love this quick and easy recipe … added chocolate chips and the extra sugar the first time. Can’t wait to try some different add-ons! Thanks …

I love blank slates; they’re so fun to work with. I get to bake like a scientist finding what works and what doesn’t. My favorites have cranberry orange, lemon ginger, chocolate peppermint, and cheddar dill.

Really nice recipe :) My son and I made these today. We added dried cranberries and orange juice. They are so good!
