Description

Delicious, salty, (appropriately) greasy onion rings.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole White Or Sweet Onion
  • 2 cups Buttermilk
  • 2 whole Eggs
  • 3 cups Flour
  • 2 Tablespoons Salt, Plus Additional For Finished Rings
  • 1 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Fresh Ground Pepper
  • 48 ounces, fluid Vegetable Oil

Preparation

Pour oil into a large Dutch oven – just enough until it reaches about 2 inches in depth, and heat to 350 to 375F.

Slice white or sweet onions in to very thin rings. In a large bowl combine buttermilk and eggs. In a second large bowl combine flour, salt, pepper, cayenne, and garlic powder.

Place onion rings in the egg and buttermilk mixture and allow to soak for a few minutes (up to five minutes). Remove rings from the buttermilk mixture and coat in the flour mixture. Make sure to shake off all excess flour before droping each onion into the oil (when you drop an onion ring into the oil it should start bubbling and sizzling right away, if this doesn’t happen, your oil isn’t hot enough and you should heat the oil longer). Fry for 1-2 minutes until golden then remove to wire rack. Salt onion rings to taste immediately, while still hot. Repeat with the remaining onion rings. Keep in a warm oven until ready to serve.
