Description

Salty. Crispy. Fried. Onions. Need I say more?

Ingredients

  • 4 cups Canola Oil (or More To Fill The Bottom Of Frying Vessel)
  • 1 whole Large Red Onion
  • 1-½ cup Lowfat Buttermilk
  • 2-½ cups Flour
  • 1-½ Tablespoon Garlic Powder
  • 1-½ Tablespoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper (less If You Don't Like Heat)
  • 1 Tablespoon Salt For Sprinkling
  • Garlic Ranch Dressing Or Ketchup, To Serve

Preparation

Preheat oil in a deep pot (or fryer if you have one) to 350°F. Add onions and buttermilk to a large bowl and toss until combined. In a second bowl, mix together flour, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne.

In small batches, take the buttermilk coated onions and dredge in the seasoned flour (shaking to remove excess). Fry for 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 minutes on each side (or until golden). Place on a paper towel-lined platter and sprinkle with a tiny bit of salt. Repeat until all onions are golden and crisp.

Serve with garlic ranch dressing (or ketchup).
